FOY Strawberries
I ate our first of year strawberries yesterday. There were seven. I ate them all and they were magnificent. So red and juicy..... We did a little work in our strawberry patch this spring--pulling old June bearing mother plants from the front half of the patch and rooting the everbearing runners from the back half in their place. We liked the taste of the everbearers better--and they produce for way longer. But, the transplants did not care for it. The new plants didn't take the best and aren't producing at all this year. As such, each of these beauties was a extra special treat. We certainly won't be getting enough for strawberry jam this year.
FOY (first of year) is an acronym I picked up in my birding adventures. Its used to indicate in birding journals, records, and conversations the first time a species is seen each year. This info helps to note the migration and breeding patterns of birds related to the passing seasons. I think it works great for the garden, too.
Fresh strawberries are so shockingly different from store bought ones! Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteLike night and day. Matt used to think he didn't really like strawberries until we got some fresh-picked at a farmstand on vacation years and years ago.
DeleteStrawberries are my favorite fruit! And strawberry shortcake is my favorite dessert (I make a yummy homemade shortcake.
ReplyDeleteI've never made shortcake. I liked eating it when other people did though! I bet its been a decade. It was my dad's favorite when I was growing up. Berries are my favorite fruit, but among the berries I'd be hard pressed to pick a favorite.
DeleteYummy. It's great to get your own strawberries, even if just a few! In time you'll be sure to harvest lots, it seems to sometimes take a while to get them established. Also you've reminded me I need to weed and mulch our strawberries for the coming season :-)
ReplyDeleteWe actually got another ten or so after this--so maybe it won't be as bad as I thought! Every one is a tasty, precious miracle! Happy strawberry tending to you--glad I could help! :)
