A Simple Woman's Day Book for February 16, 2015

Outside my window...there is no snow.  There was a light dusting (a "1/100th of an inch" snow, Matt tells me...something his dad used to say) this morning, but its gone now.  I think its a little early for the garlic and irises to be coming up, but I am having a hard time complaining about it.  I am ready for spring.  Bare legs, bicycles, camping, hammock time.

I am thinking....about letting Ginger go outside a little bit.  She really, really wants to.  Its become quite clear.  I spoke with her previous owner yesterday and he said she would go out onto his deck sometimes.  So, maybe we'll try it.  But, I am nervous.  She's such a scaredy-cat and its a great big world out there and all...

I am thankful for...Matt.  We had a totally swell and low-key Valentine's Day.  I am sure thankful that we can celebrate love without getting all wrapped up in commercialization.  We ate good food, drank good drink, went to the (indoor) waterpark, and just enjoyed being with each other--with a hint of extra luxury

From the kitchen...come lots of projects.  I made vegetable broth, a double batch of my homemade hot sauce, a new kind of harissa-type hot sauce, a big pot of brown rice, the ever phenomenal Chickpea Toss, and a new soup recipe out of our copy of Fresh From the Vegan Slow-Cooker.  And of course, no soup is complete without some bread to dunk so I whipped up some breadsticks, too.  And that was only Sunday!

I am wearing... a rather drab grey shirt, spiced up with a mutlicolored scarf my step-mother gave me, and a denim skirt.

I am creating...small pieces of quilting.  Working on small projects I can catch glimpses of why quilting is enjoyed by so many.  When I was working on my quilt top, well, that was another story.

I am going...to have a weekend with two of my besties from high school.  Meagan wants to do some sewing and Alli has an appointment in town so they decided to come over together for the weekend.  Huzzah!  I so enjoy spending time with them both.  I look forward to the fun and games and laughter already.

I am reading...The Sound and the Fury by William Faulkner.  Its a little tricky because of the stream of consciousness style, but I am enjoying it.  Reading Faulkner is recreation and makes me feel like I am getting smarter, too.

On my mind...death and aging.  It keeps coming up.

Around the house...the first seeds are up in the seedling nursery, Ginger's pile of shredded paper keeps expanding in footprint, it was nice enough to play yard games on the weekend with just shirt-sleeves on.

One of my favorite things...when things I learn about intersect.  Reading Traffic immediately on the heels of Why We Make Mistakes did that quite a bit.  Its interesting and adds a continually expanding depth of understanding to the topic, I think.

A few plans for the rest of the week...teaching Hannah how to make jelly, making a new batch of chapstick, teaching Patrick the basics of beer brewing, finish the patchwork potholders I've been making, and the aforementioned besties weekend.  Yay.

A small window into my life...
