The Garden Song - Inspiration Thrusday

The Garden Song has been sung by so many people over the years, myself included.  I believe it originated with  David Mallett, but I first heard it sung by Pete Seeger.  And I loved it instantly.  Around our place its a household favorite.  I quite appreciate the music of John Denver and so this version--with The Muppets--is pretty awesome, though I didn't learn of it until several years later.

The garden is a constant source of inspiration and enhances the quality of my life in ways innumerable--from nourishing food for my body to soothing meditation for my soul.

"Find my way in nature's chain.  Tune my body and my brain to the music of the land."
The Garden Song

Inch by inch, row by row, gonna make this garden grow,
All it takes is a rake and a hoe and a piece of fertile ground.
Inch by inch, row by row, someone bless the seeds I sow.
Someone warm them from below, 'til the rain comes tumbling down.

Pulling weeds and picking stones, man is made of dreams and bones.
Feel the need to grow my own 'cause the time is close at hand.
Grain for grain, sun and rain, find my way in nature's chain,
tune my body and my brain to the music from the land.

Plant your rows straight and long, temper them with prayer and song.
Mother Earth will make you strong if you give her love and care.
Old crow watching hungrily from his perch in yonder tree.
In my garden I'm as free as that feathered thief up there.

Inch by inch, row by row, gonna make this garden grow,
All it takes is a rake and a hoe and a piece of fertile ground.
Inch by inch, row by row, someone bless the seeds I sow.
Someone warm them from below, 'til the rain comes tumbling down.

  1. Whoa! My mom and dad had this on an 8-track. I heard that song like a thousand times on long car trips (as well as every other song on the album) Didn't know John Denver only covered it and wasn't an original.
